New EPA waste tracking system to take effect from 1 July 2021

Story 7 EPA Waste Tracker2

The EPA’s new waste tracking system – Waste Tracker - will help waste producers meet obligations in relation to new laws relating to reportable priority waste commencing on 1 July 2021.

Key points:

  • Clinical waste is classified as a reportable priority waste and health services will be significantly impacted by the new laws commencing on 1 July 2021.
  • The EPA’s Waste Tracker will help waste producers meet obligations in relation to the new laws.

EPA's Waste Tracker allows producers and EPA to track the delivery status of waste every time it changes hands, replacing EPA's former electronic waste transport certificate system.

As clinical waste is classified as a reportable priority waste, health services will be significantly impacted by the new laws under the Environment Protection Act 2017.

The EPA portal is open and waste producers can create a portal account now to ensure waste transporters can collect reportable wastes from 1 July 2021.

A recent waste framework webinar hosted by the EPA on 8 June 2021 is now available to view.

The webinar was for anyone who produces, transports or receives waste in Victoria and topics included:

  • the new waste duties
  • how to classify and manage waste
  • requirements for businesses that generate, transport and receive waste
  • the waste tracker system
  • accredited consigners
  • waste permissions
  • where to find more information.
