Recall and Recall Health

HSV supports Recall and Recall Health as key enablers of supply chain reform and a critical patient safety initiative. GS1’s Recall and Recall Health are electronic notification systems that streamline messaging around product recalls to improve our health supply chain, and ultimately patient safety.

Recall is the electronic notification system for non-therapeutic goods (e.g. domestic paper products) and Recall Health is the electronic notification system used for therapeutic goods (e.g. medical consumables).

Therapeutic product recalls are critical and must follow the Uniform Recall Procedure for Therapeutic Goods 2022 (URPTG) guidelines. Communicating recall information quickly and accurately can save lives.

How the Recall and Recall Health portals work

Both Recall portals allow product sponsors (suppliers) to create recall and non-recall notifications that follow the recall procedures of the appropriate industry regulator.

Sponsors can also submit recall notifications directly to the regulator for review and approval.

  • For Recall Health, this is the Therapeutic Goods Administration's (TGA) Uniform Recall Procedure for Therapeutic Goods (URPTG) guidelines.
  • For Recall this is Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

As well as streamlining the recall process, the Recall and Recall Health portals deliver recall information to the correct contact person, improve the timeliness of the recall process using email and SMS notifications, and ultimately improve the reliability and visibility of the system to ensure patient safety.
